We are still experimenting with it but we thought you might like to take a look at what we have come up with so far. Why Use the Means of Grace?

We have just completed our series of 52 Biblical reasons for believers to pray together - one reason for every week of the year! We began with the fact that we are commanded to pray, then worked through prayer as a spiritual weapon, prayer as a means to know more of the Holy Spirit's influences in our lives and therefore to have more of His fruit produced within us, and closed by looking at how to overcome some things that may hold us back from praying. As one of the “Reasons” asks us, “can we think of anything more powerful and effective that we can do to forward God's plans and purposes than to pray?”

You will find links to each of the reasons by clicking here. Read each entry prayerfully(!) and ask God to convict you of the truth of the arguments presented and to motivate you to pray more, in private, in your families and in your fellowships.

With the completion of our series of 52 Reasons to Pray, we decided to expand the blog to consider reasons to use the other means of grace that God has provided. This week, therefore, we have begun a series on 52 Reasons to Read and Hear God’s Word.

We begin this series by meditating on the fact that God’s Word is really that - the Word of God and not of men. The King of Kings Himself has spoken to us through His written Word, but sadly in many cases all our household Bibles do is to gather dust on bookshelves. The series presented here is therefore designed to give us reasons from the Bible to encourage and persuade us to read its pages more than we currently do. It is as we read and listen to God's Word and as God's Spirit uses it in our lives that it will do the work for which God gave it to us - that of salvation and sanctification. Our prayer is that we all might become avid students of the Word - and not just hearers of it but doers also!

Nothing you can do to be saved?

Check out our evening sermon on May 15th at 6 PM: "I won't come to Christ because... There's nothing I can do to be saved."

Some people, when exposed to the doctrine of God's Sovereignty in salvation, turn this into an excuse for continued unbelief. They say to themselves, "If I am meant to become a Christian, God will make me one. There is nothing I can do about it!" Therefore, they do nothing, but continue in a path of disobedience and unbelief. We will see that such an approach is highly presumptuous and effectively puts God to the test. While it is certainly true that God alone decides whom He will save and whom He will leave to receive the just punishment for their sin, we must not overlook all the commands of Scripture that tell us we are to strive to enter God's Kingdom, we are to ask, to seek, to knock, we are not to give up until God grants us admission to the company of His people. Inactivity on our part will most effectively seal our eternal fate.

What's in Your Way?

Check out our evening sermon on March 20th at 6 PM: "I Won't Come to Christ Because... There's Something I Don't Want to Give Up."

In this new series, we are examining some of the justifications people give for not coming to Christ and receiving Him as Savior and Lord.

The message will focus on the Rich Young Ruler (Matt 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30), who went away from Jesus sad because he was not willing to give up his great wealth on earth in order to have treasure in heaven (eternal life). We will see that it will not profit us to gain the whole world if, as a result, we forfeit our souls.

No Time For Christ Right Now?

Check out our evening sermon on February 20th at 6 PM: "I Won't Come to Christ Because... I Just Don't Have Time Right Now."

We will look at Paul's encounter with Felix in the Acts of the Apostles, where Paul spoke on righteousness, self-control and the judgment and Felix (who became afraid) dismissed Paul until a more "convenient time". We will examine the elements of Paul's message and see that Felix was right to be afraid but completely wrong not to come to Christ on the pretext that it was not convenient or timely at that moment. We will see that it is both dangerous and foolish to react to the Gospel as Felix did.

"Catechism for Young Children" Teaching Resource Now Available on our Site!

We are excited to report that, after several years of development, we have completed work on a teaching program for young children and have uploaded it fully to our web site!

Based on the "Catechism for Young Children", this program is designed to help you take youngsters in your fellowship through the essential teachings of the Bible in a structured and enjoyable way.

Each question and answer in the catechism is addressed, along with supplemental questions and worksheets or activities to draw out the meanings and aid understanding.

All fifteen sections plus review lessons are now available on the web site:

3. Mankind

4. The Covenant of Works

5. Sin

6-7 The Covenant of Grace

8. Salvation

9. The Offices of Christ

12th Annual Reformation Lecture Series

The Great Hymn Writers of the Church

Each year, Grace Church holds a lecture series in October to remember God's great work in the Reformation, and to survey the people, events and teachings of that period in history and its subsequent influence on the church (see the earlier lectures). The lectures so far have been enthusiastically received.

This year, we turn our attention to the introduction of hymn singing into worship. We will examine the debate over hymn-singing in the church before reviewing the lives and some of the hymns of the great hymn-writers of the past.

October 3rd - History and theology of music in the church
October 10th - The life and hymns of Isaac Watts
October 17th - The life and hymns of Charles Wesley
October 24th - The life and hymns of John Newton
October 31st - The life and hymns of Horatius Bonar

All the lectures will take place in our main auditorium begin at 6:00 pm and conclude around 7:15 pm.

Two New Ministry Developments

Embedded Videos

We have been working behind the scenes this month to improve the accessibility of the videos we have embedded on our Live Broadcast blogs. Once the broadcast is over, we provide for each blog page an embedded version of the video from that event. Vimeo just released a new format for the embedding, which makes the videos more compatible with a wide array of devices that might be used to watch them. So we embarked on a project to update the embedding code for the 225 videos from discipleship classes, morning and evening sermons and that project is now complete. Video Quality Enhancement

The video recording from the evening sermon on 8/1 was the first one where we directly uploaded the .MTS file from our camera to Vimeo. The final result seems better than when we pre-process the file to a .mp4 format but the upload takes longer - play the video in full-screen mode to see the quality!

Video Ministry Update - Transfer to Vimeo Completed!

In a project that began on March 10 of this year, we have been gradually transferring our video recordings to a new home at Vimeo.com. Previously, they lived in two separate accounts on Google Video and a third on MotionBox. During the process, we discovered several videos that had never been implemented on our web site and some which had been mysteriously truncated as part of the upload to their former home. Another batch of videos had very loud mains hum that effectively obscured the audio track of the recordings and made them useless.

All these errors have been corrected as the project has progressed and today we are delighted to announce that we have uploaded the last archived video to Vimeo, giving us a total of 530 recordings on that site. Quite remarkably, from nearly 4 years of recording, there was only one video that could not be recovered and for which there is no sign of an original recording!

Our new home at Vimeo is making the videos available to a much wider audience and we have been able to categorize the videos by the month in which they were recorded (Albums) and by the ministry series to which they belong (Channels). Vimeo also allows high-definition playback of our most recent videos - which look and sound superb in comparison with some of our earlier recordings!

We hope you will enjoy and benefit from having all of our video recordings in one place, and from having a consistent interface for playing them on the internet. You can check out the completed archive at this address:

New iTunes-compatible video podcast launches!

We are pleased to announce the launch of a video podcast containing the morning and evening sermon ministry from Grace Church.

The videos are created from our high-definition recordings, converted into a format that plays well on smartphones, iPods etc. Our aim is to have the videos available on the Monday or Tuesday following their delivery in the church. We will be uploading them to our account at Blip.tv, and this re-distributes them to iTunes as a podcast.

iPod users can subscribe to the feed through iTunes, so that the new videos can easily be transferred to iPods, iPads, iPhones etc. You can access this podcast at this address:

Reasons to Pray Blog Reminder

We thought it might be a good time to send out a reminder concerning this blog. We are currently working through a series that gives (each week) a different reason for us to pray. Many of these are drawn from Scripture and some from reason.

Our weekly church bulletin contains a short expression of the reason but it seemed good to develop each one more fully and the blog is an ideal format in which to do so. It also provides a way to remind us of the reasons that we have already considered and to catch up if we missed a few. Finally, we are hoping that it will build over time into a useful reference on the subject of prayer, that will be readily available to consult in future.

Blog Ministry Grows and Grows

Our Posterous site has been set up so that when we post there, all the other sites, together with this blog and our Facebook page will all be updated at the same time. We launched a blog a couple of weeks back, in which we are aiming to provide each week a different encouragement to us to pray together - whether it is a promise from God, an argument supplied by Scripture or reason, or suchlike.

Grace Church Netvibes Page

Over the past few months, we have gradually developed a presence in several places on the internet that allow for the creation of widgets and that supply RSS feeds of the contents we add.

Today we became aware of the Netvibes service, which allows users to build public and private pages to collect together information so it can be easily accessed.

We therefore decided to try and build a Netvibes public site for Grace Church, featuring many of the feeds and widgets we now have available. We quite like the result, though there are some wrinkles still to iron out. Check out our site and see what you think:

Grace Church Comes to YouTube and Metacafe!

One of our ministry team members recently had the idea of taking clips from our sermon videos and posting them on popular sites such as YouTube and Metacafe. These sites wouldn't host videos as long as the entire message, but planting clips which summarize the contents of the sermon is a great way to tell people about our ministry and let them know how to find us on the internet.

New Presentation Software Helps Live Broadcasts

We recently discovered OpenSong and started to use it to give the words of the Bible readings and hymns as the live broadcasts are taking place.

OpenSong is open source software and so far we have found it to be powerful and flexible for this task. It makes it very easy to select Scriptures and Hymns and to construct a "set" that contains all of these items in the correct order for a given service of worship.

Video Transition Update 2

Tonight, we transferred the final video from Motionbox to Vimeo, so that all our videos from January 2009 onwards, whether on the web site or on our blogs, should now stream from Vimeo. We hope that you will enjoy the extra speed and quality that Vimeo delivers!

As time and Vimeo data allocations permit, we will now be adding all the videos from Google video to our Vimeo site (http://vimeo.com/gopcmodesto). Having moved to higher quality video recordings recently, this transition from Google Video will take a little longer. In addition, we have videos dating back to September 2006 on the Google site so there are perhaps close to 300 files that need to be moved in total. We intend to begin with December 2008 and work backwards as rapidly as we can.

Sermon Notes Archive on Scribd.com Now Up to Date

After several months of activity, our sermon notes archive on Scribd.com was brought fully up to date today! The archive now comprises about 1600 documents dating back over 16 years of ministry, and provides another place to access the notes in addition to our web site. New notes will be added to the archive from now on as they are produced each week.

As opportunity arises, the notes on Scribd will be arranged not only by year (as they are now) but also by ministry series, to reflect the arrangement on our web site.

High Definition Video is Here!

We are excited to announce that we began yesterday evening to record our sermons and Sunday school lessons in high definition(HD)video, and increased the quality of our live broadcasts at the same time.

What does this mean? The quality of our broadcasts and recordings is going to increase dramatically! We are going to work over the coming weeks to get some wrinkles out of our systems as we adjust to the larger file sizes for HD video and to the different settings that are available for recording HD video, but if you take a look at the recording from yesterday's evening service, you should notice a huge improvement already - you can even play it full screen and it looks quite good!

We have almost had our new web site for a year now, so you may be thinking that you know your way around it pretty well - and perhaps you do!

However, we decided to create a new area on our Home Page called "Featured Site Contents", in which we will promote certain contents of the site each month, as a way to draw attention to the extensive array of materials that we now have on the site, and to provide an easy way to access them.

One of the things that was attractive to us about using Vimeo for our video hosting was that the site provides a range of possibilities for delivering video content to viewers, beyond simply visiting our web site or the vimeo.com site. For example, there is an exciting range of widgets that can be built, and these can be used to highlight certain videos or showcase the whole collection. We have already built a few of these and you can take a look at our widgets blog.

In addition, though, we found it was possible to mount a Vimeo widget in our web browser toolbar application. In case you aren't aware, this toolbar gives you easy access to all our internet ministry sites and content. It works with Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox Browsers and you can install it from here. It is automatically kept up to date as we make changes and the most recent alteration we made is the addition of a shiny new videos button. Click on this and a Vimeo widget drops down, allowing you to browse and play videos right from the toolbar!

It is really great when applications work together like this and deliver really nice functionality in a simple and attractive way!

Video Transition Update

We have now moved all of our videos for 2010 across to the Vimeo site at http://vimeo.com/gopcmodesto and will be using Vimeo as the home for new videos going forward. All the 2010 videos on our website and on our live broadcast blog pages now stream from Vimeo rather than from Motionbox.
Over time, we are intending to work back through our video archive and add as many videos as possible to Vimeo. We intend at least to move all the 2009 videos over but if this goes well, we may also move some of the older videos that are still on Google video. Watch this space for more progress updates!

New Home for Ministry Videos

We have decided to begin moving our videos across to a new home at Vimeo.com. The reason for this is that the new site will give more visibility to our videos, and allows greater functionality in the way we can distribute them. It will take several months to complete the transition but once this is done, we will have an RSS feed that will alert subscribers to the posting of a new video at Vimeo, we will be able to supply widgets that people can use to provide access to our videos on their own web sites, Facebook pages etc, and our videos will be available to the community that uses Vimeo.

Videos for most of January 2010 are already converted to the Vimeo site. You can check out our new home at http://vimeo.com/gopcmodesto.

Sermon Notes on Scribd - Progress Report

We are continuing to upload our sermon notes to the Scribd.com service at a rate of one month every day. Today, we finished uploading the notes from 2004 and we estimate that the collection will be completed in mid April.

At that time, you will be able to access all our notes from late 1993 onwards on this site, as a parallel service to the access we already provide on our own web site.
